Motivation Monday 11.10.14: What Will Your Verse Be?

Motivation Monday 11.10.14

Walt Whitman’s “O Me! O Life!” never gets old. No matter if it is read by Robin Williams in Dead Poet’s Society or my high school english teacher, each time it holds a powerful injection of motivation.

I often look for motivation through extrinsic sources, and if you’re the same, it’s probably why you’re listening to this playlist.

However, contradictory to this search, Whitman’s poem makes you look inward. From the cathartic dive into your ambitions through poetry, the motivation comes organically from something within that you just can’t identify. It’s why in Dead Poet’s Society, Williams states the following in a preface to Whitman:

“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

Poetry brings out the organic nature of our intrinsic motivation. We align with the beauty of the verses. We find solace in understanding we are not alone in the face of entropy. And we are collectively inspired by the potential of the individual.

So, in today’s mix, you’ll find the first track using Whitman’s verses in a way that is surely going to set your Monday straight. Use the music for motivation to get out of bed. Use the lyrics and poetry to change your day, life, and world.

Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,
Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,
Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer:
That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world”
Now go change it.

Ahh, Monday’s. The bane of all workers’ existence. Until you hear this playlist (I hope). What we have here is a playlist that combines powerful lyricism, upbeat chillstep, and some of my favorite past/present/future artists. Also, a huge shoutout to my highschool friend and now up-and-coming intellectual (who can blow your mind in one conversation) Eddie Wellz – who is featured on this playlist in the intro. If you like what you hear, go check out one of his music video, by clicking here. There’s something unique when you find an artist who raps in a true flow state; something you find in every Eddie Wellz track.

Enjoy and Conquer your Monday.

Once again proving that there is no theme to this blog, today’s Motivation Monday is a series of blood-pumping speeches and athems by some of my favorite motivation idols. I often get lost in guilty pleasures, and re-listening to these seven tunes always set me straight. Cheers to another week and thanks for all the lovely support!

A simple change in routine can quickly spice things up in one’s life. Take this week’s Motivation Monday mix for example. The opening song may not be expected, but it will sure as hell get you out from under those covers. Let the rest of the mix do its normal work, but let the cover of the Arthur theme song by Chance The Rapper be the change you so desperately needed. Hope you enjoyed your monday and take on your upcoming Tuesday with crazy, quirky fervor.

Caffeine has nothing on this mix.

I’m not one for trap or dubstep but this first song got me through one of my best workouts as of late. If you’re not into this and could use a dialed down mix, check out this mix. After Space Jam, we head into something calmer with my favorite upbeat style of taking slower indie songs and throwing deep house at them. Bon Iver, Death Cab, and a crazy orgasmic Bastille cover: it cannot get better than this. Enjoy the week everyone!

I know this came a bit late, but I was backpacking up in Sedona for the weekend and didn’t have internet connection! But here it is, this week’s Motivation Monday, a somewhat calmer version of what I’ve been throwing out each week. Some of my favorite artists are on here, so hopefully if your Monday was bad, this can bring inspiration and optimism to your Tuesday.
