Walt Whitman’s “O Me! O Life!” never gets old. No matter if it is read by Robin Williams in Dead Poet’s Society or my high school english teacher, each time it holds a powerful injection of motivation.
I often look for motivation through extrinsic sources, and if you’re the same, it’s probably why you’re listening to this playlist.
However, contradictory to this search, Whitman’s poem makes you look inward. From the cathartic dive into your ambitions through poetry, the motivation comes organically from something within that you just can’t identify. It’s why in Dead Poet’s Society, Williams states the following in a preface to Whitman:
“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”
Poetry brings out the organic nature of our intrinsic motivation. We align with the beauty of the verses. We find solace in understanding we are not alone in the face of entropy. And we are collectively inspired by the potential of the individual.
So, in today’s mix, you’ll find the first track using Whitman’s verses in a way that is surely going to set your Monday straight. Use the music for motivation to get out of bed. Use the lyrics and poetry to change your day, life, and world.
“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world”
Now go change it.
